Unlock the skills of climbing frozen waterfalls in the Canadian Rockies. Whether you’re brand new to ice or have some experience, this beginner ice climbing course will build a solid foundation in movement, systems and safety so you can explore ice with confidence. 

What you’ll learn

  • Efficient movement on ice: kicking in crampons, swinging ice tools, moving foot-by-foot with fluidity and purpose

  • Top-rope belay systems: how to top rope belay safely in an ice climbing environment.

  • Risk assessment, hazard awareness and decision-making in frozen terrain — we’ll teach you how to read ice, assess conditions, and climb responsibly

Logistics

Meeting time & location: We will meet at Beamers Coffee in Canmore at 7:30 a.m. 

Climb and learn the basics from 8:30am - 4:00pm
The ice climbing venue will vary depending on weather and conditions. 

Transportation

Not included. Our climbing venues are not accessible by public transit, so participants must arrive by personal vehicle.

Park passes

Not included. Each participant is responsible for obtaining the appropriate provincial or national parks pass.



Gear and Clothing

All technical climbing equipment, with the exception of mountaineering boots, is included in your course fee. Boots can be rented from Gear-Up Sports in Canmore

Required gear not included in your course fee is listed below.

  • Wool or synthetic top and bottom base layers

  • Warm puffy jacket

  • Waterproof jacket 

  • Gloves (2+ pairs recommended)

  • Winter hat

  • Sunglasses

  • Mountaineering boots compatible with crampons (rentals are available from Gear-Up Sports in Canmore)

  • Day-pack

  • Water

  • Snacks/lunch
